Build a successful web site
Tips for an atomic start
Let's begin with the most common and dramatic question that affects most (if not all) of the n00bs nowadays.
Q: WHY?!
A: Well, guessing on your tone I'm assuming you're desperate, unhappy, brain-emptied, and willing to give thousands of dollars just to have one (1) visitor per day, but guess what - 5minutes later - yes, that's right! You have absolutely no idea how to get into the big race, that's why you're reading this and going to follow what's rated as the most helpful tips to have a "sweet go" on the net.
Material and skills needed for this mini-lesson:
- a brain (whatever flavor you like)
- a mouse or keyboard (to make this page magically scroll)
- couple ideas
- mine (?)
- your neighbor's
- your pet's
Let's get serious now
Gather up some ideas:
If you have absolutely no idea on what's going to be you're new BOOM, minimize this page and start taking notes on the following things:
- What do you need?
- What do other users need?
- What's missing on the virtual(or real) world?
- What are, in you're opinion, the top 5 big BOOMs nowadays?
When you have answered this question analyze them.
Is #1 similar (if not equal) to #2?
Does #3 somehow relate to #1 or #2?
Does #4 have/had a big impact on you're daily usage of the virtual world?
Can this whole idea work?
Once you have a basic overview on what is going on, and you have a simple idea on what you would like to launch, lets get started with the next step.
URLs
"Simple is better."
I assume that's the main point of this step. Make your URL as short (short compared to "johnfranksmithismyname.c*m") as possible, "simple", and at the same time easy to access (how easy it can be to be entered using a keyboard, minimizing the number of typos that could occur).
Let's analyze some of the big BOOM's URLs:
Most of them (if not all) are:
- Easy to type, thus reducing the amount of typos that can occur
- Have a nice "sound" - which can be simple and/or natural - making them easy to be remembered
- Are kind of short
- "Can" have their own meaning - in order to be successful is recommended that the URL itself has to be descriptive
*Make sure the URL you are going to register is available!*
Design
Well not much to say within this step, in fact, the same URL rules apply to this.
The design has to be:
- Simple (users don't have time to struggle in order to get to a link or to have access to a particular page)
- Creative (it has to be unique, not too fancy though)
- Clean (everything has to be in order and colors NEED to be alike)
- Fun (no matter what the age is, people like to have fun with the web)
- Light (those 600KB backgrounds, 50KB of image-links, that colorful 250KB banner, will magically make your visitors disappear)
If you decide to success using blogs I recommend using
Wordpress as a main base for your work.
Content
Content is all. If you have a great URL, an awesome DESIGN, and your chihuahua being your editor... guess what?! You should really get a job!
The content has to be:
- Unique (people need to know new stuff, are in search of details, basically want MORE)
- Up to date (don't write about your Grate-grandma's first tooth decay, it's just not *right*)
- Easy to follow (as good papers, don't jump from a subject to another as you were playing I don't know what)
- Important keywords have to be in bold
- Divided into sections, so people can have some pause between either the sections themselves or among articles
- Use quotes once in a while
- Always double-check your work (in particular check for toypos)
- Don't limit yourself to a particular language, make translators available to your visitors (Babel Fish Translator)
*Remember to focus ALWAYS on your first idea (remember?)*
Spread of your work
Use SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tips to get well ranked in search engines, add you're URL address in forum signatures, emails, chats, whatever place you think is appropriate.
Let friends know, and tell them to spread the word. Submit your site to big guys as Digg, Technorati, or other.
Monetize your work
A "few" ads will not destroy your new world. Most common form of ads are the Google Adsense ads, these have very potential effects, and can be customized based on your needs.

Last point(s):
- Be serious about this
- Be positive
- Have fun! :-)
